In the spring of 2004, amidst the intense urban combat of the Battle of Najaf, Marines like Brent Downing engaged in a fierce push to root out the Mahdi Militia. The insurgents, overwhelmed, fell back to the fortified sanctuary of the Imam Ali Mosque. With the assault on the holy site looming, a sudden ceasefire brought the fighting to a tense halt.
