During the Cold War, the urgent need for intelligence gathering spurs the creation of cutting-edge reconnaissance technology. The United States manages to penetrate Soviet airspace with the covert U-2 stealth aircraft. However, time is against them, and the operation faces jeopardy when American pilot Captain Gary Powers is captured. As the space race ignites, both sides recruit engineers from former Nazi Germany, leveraging their expertise to achieve significant advancements in space exploration, while also repurposing that technology for military purposes.
