S01E01 Part One

When Angelica Fanshawe's noble mother opts for the Catholic faith over England's Anglican law, Angelica becomes a royal ward of King Charles I, who grants her permission to marry her childhood friend and cousin, Harry Fanshawe. However, growing opposition to the king's authoritarian rule, previously enforced with a heavy hand, leads to a parliamentary uprising that ignites a brutal civil war. This turmoil results in tragedy for the couple, as Harry is executed after his royalist forces surrender to the military strategist Oliver Cromwell, all while their estate serves as a refuge for the fleeing royal court.
