Caroline finds herself expecting, but tragedy strikes soon after the birth when her newborn son falls gravely ill. In a moment of despair, she ascends the tallest hill, seeking divine intervention to trade her life for her brother's. Meanwhile, Charles and Mr. Edwards frantically search for her. On her journey, Laura encounters Jonathan, an enigmatic mountain dweller who appears destined to assist her during this pivotal moment in her life.
