Both had been bound, sexually assaulted, and strangled with their own garments. Just the previous evening, the childhood friends had enjoyed a night out at the World’s End pub on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. Witnesses reported seeing them conversing with two unidentified men. The search for their attackers escalated into one of Scotland’s largest manhunts, as the nation was gripped by fear and the media began to draw connections between these murders and other unsolved cases in Glasgow.
