In 1968, Ruth is tormented by the loss of her young daughter, Alice. Fast forward to 1987, and parents Helen and Eddie grow increasingly concerned about their daughter Amy, who insists she has an imaginary friend named Alice. By 2010, Mark and his expectant girlfriend Nisha move into the house. While removing wallpaper, Nisha discovers a photograph of a little girl, just moments before she loses her balance on the ladder and injures her ankle.
