John and Anne Darwin are a couple drowning in debt. As bankruptcy looms, John hatches a plan to stage his own death by canoe, leaving his wife horrified. Despite her shock, they manage to execute the scheme, with John disappearing from view while Anne comforts their sons in the aftermath.
