Onyl Torres
Onyl Torres began his artistic journey as a young actor with Dulaang Sibol and as a baritone soloist for the renowned Ateneo Glee Club. After earning his AB Political Science degree, he deepened his craft through studies in choral conducting at the UP College of Music and the Asian Institute for Liturgy and Music. He made his professional theater debut in Repertory Philippines’ *Cinderella* in 2001, launching a career that would see him become a versatile performer on stage and screen, as well as a sought-after music director and vocal coach for workshops, musicals, and corporate events.
Torres was the creative force behind Peninsula Manila’s *Sing@Ning: Search for the Ultimate Voice*. His work as musical director earned him nominations for the Gawad Buhay! Awards in 2012 and 2013 for *Jekyll and Hyde* and *The Producers*, and he was a finalist for Best Musical Direction at the 2014 Aliw Awards for *Sandosenang Sapatos*. In 2014, he made his independent film debut in the Gawad Urian-nominated *Philippino Story*, directed by Benjie Garcia. He later appeared in the film adaptation of Herlyn Alegre’s acclaimed Virgin Labfest play *Imbisibol*, directed by Lawrence Fajardo, which premiered at the 2015 Sinag Film Festival.
Upcoming projects include a role in *Singapura: The Musical*, directed by Broadway veteran Greg Ganakas and opening at Singapore’s Capitol Theatre in May 2015. Currently, Torres is a managing partner at Upstart Productions, guest conductor of the Manila String Machine Orchestra, and an artistic board member of the Philippine Choral Directors Association.
